Chennai: Steven Smith and Ben Rohrer fought back after early setback to guide New South Wales to a fantastic win over Mumbai Indians in a low scoring thriller at MA Chidambaram Stadium on Sunday.
Chasing 101 to win, South Wales lost five wickets for just 28 before Smith (45) and Rohrer (26) came up with a gritty partnership to pull off a thumping victory in 17 overs.
The partnership came after Abu Nechim took three wickets in three overs to dent NSW run chase.
Nechim dismissed New South Wales openers Shane Watson and David Warner in one over.
Watson edged the first ball of Nechim's first over off his pads onto his stumps and Warner gave Mumbai captain Harbhajan Singh a simple catch at short extra cover on the last ball of the same over.
Earlier, Stuart Clark and Steve O'Keefe took two wickets each as New South Wales restricted Mumbai Indians to 100/7. James Franklin, top scorer for Mumbai, remained unbeaten on 42.
Earlier, Mumbai Indian won the toss and choose to bat.
