According to sources, the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) headquarters was one of the targets in the attack, which was initiated by the Taliban. Television images showed several injured men with sounds of gun fire in the background.
Several thunderous blasts were heard following which gunshots were reported from the area, which houses embassies of several countries and also local and foreign intelligence buildings.
Media reports said that the attackers, armed with AK 47s and rocket launchers, have taken position in an under construction building as the gun battle between the assailants and security forces continued till the reports last filtered in.
The attack has come weeks after extremists stormed into the British Council. Earlier, nearly 80 US troops were injured in a bomb attack, which took place on the eve of 9/11 terror attacks' tenth anniversary.
No report of any harm to the Indian embassy, which is situated close to the attack site, has been received yet.
